Types of CSS Essays
Understand the Difference — Write with Confidence
To write a high-scoring essay, you must identify the type first — then adopt the right structure. CSS topics fall into 2 categories and 3 types.
Purpose
- ●FPSC sets 10 essay topics every year — each belongs to a type
- ●Identifying the type in 60 seconds decides your entire approach
- ●Open-ended (Abstract) vs Close-ended (Argumentative / Expository)
- ●Wrong type identification = wrong structure = lost marks

Two Broad Categories
Every CSS essay topic is either Open-ended or Close-ended
Category 1
Open-Ended
→ Abstract Essay
No fixed meaning — open to different perspectives. Writer presents own understanding using quotes, philosophy, and concepts.
Example: “Sometimes we do not see what we see” (CSS 2019)
Category 2
Close-Ended
→ Argumentative + Expository
Fixed meaning with specific boundaries. Writer analyses causes, effects, and solutions with facts and evidence.
Example: “Water crisis and national unity” (CSS 2016)

Abstract Essay
Open-Ended
Interpret the topic your way. Use ideas, quotations, personal understanding, and strong justification. Words are not taken literally.
Structure
Flexible & creative — hook with quote/concept, develop your interpretation, link to Pakistan where possible
Argumentative Essay
Close-Ended
Choose one stance (Thesis), present the opposite view (Antithesis), then defend your position (Synthesis). Compare both sides.
Structure
Thesis paragraph → Antithesis paragraph → Synthesis (defend your thesis against counter-arguments)
Expository Essay
Close-Ended
Stay close to the literal meaning of the topic. Discuss dimensions: causes, impacts, challenges, and remedies with facts and evidence.
Structure
Segment topic → causes → effects → Pakistan context → solutions/reforms (logical & systematic)
